Lok Sabha Passes Triple Talaq Bill, Over To Rajya Sabha Now

Lok Sabha today passed the contentious Triple Talaq- Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019 . The bill seeks to replace the ordinance passed by the previous government in February after a similar bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. 303 parliamentarians voted in favour whereas 82 MPs voted against the bill.

Presenting government’s arguments, Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said “The bill to ban instant Triple Talaq is about gender justice,  Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday as he introduced it in the Lok Sabha for consideration and passing. “This law is not about religion or garnering votes. It is for women empowerment,” Prasad said. The Bill makes declaration of talaq a cognizable offence, attracting up to three years’ imprisonment with a fine.
