After Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is considering the option of going solo in West Bengal for the Lok Sabha polls. An overwhelming majority of senior state Congress leaders whom Rahul Gandhi and other AICC representatives have been consulting on the party’s election strategy is learnt to have favoured the Congress going on its own in the Trinamool Congress ruled state as they argue that any alliance with Mamata Banerjee’s party will be disastrous for the State Congress due to the “in-built incompatibility” of both.
The Rahul Gandhi-led AICC is sensitive to the state Congress unit’s views when it comes to deciding on the alliance. The AICC has decided to “go slow” on the Bengal alliance talks, while fast-tracking various other state party units’ election preparations and focusing on “workable alliances” in other states.
