As a fallout of the Rs 240-crore NH-74 (four laning project) land acquisition scam that originated in Udham Singh Nagar, the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways has stopped compensation payments to owners against land acquisition through the joint accounts system opened in the name of Competent Authority Land Acquisition (CALA) for different national highway projects.
To check misappropriation of funds, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a single account centralised fund management system for proper management of compensation funds for the land acquired for national highway projects undertaken by the NHAI.“All the payments will be routed through the centralised Competent Authority Land Acquisition (CALA) account, instead of the CALA joint accounts,” said Uttarakhand Chief Secretary S Ramaswamy.
