In a significant breakthrough, NTPC is going to start operations of India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Ladakh within 2-3 months and ahead of scheduled commissioning in December.

NTPC Green Energy CEO Mohit Bhargava told ETNergeWorld that the state-run power company is planning to commission its green hydrogen fuel station project in Leh by August-September this year, which is ahead of schedule.

“The project is scheduled to be completed by , ” 2023. We are trying to complete it before the scheduled time. ”

The project will produce 80 kg of 99.97 per cent pure hydrogen per day that will be compressed, stored and distributed. NTPC plans to run five hydrogen fuel cell buses in the region.

“The, buses will be provided by Ashok Leyland.

The project, to be set up at Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh, will be India’s first green hydrogen fueling station. The power generator had awarded the contract for the project in June 2022 to Amara Raja Power Systems, which is part of the $1.3 billion Amara Raja Group.

Under the project, green hydrogen will be produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis powered by renewable energy. The project is being set up at an altitude of 3,600 metres above sea level with a temperature change of minus 14 degrees to plus 20 degrees Celsius.

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, had floated the tender for the project in July last year. NTPC is also setting up a 1.25 MW solar power plant to make REL hydrogen fuelling station completely green.
