Hallmarking of Gold & Silver items

The Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 has enabling provisions for making hallmarking of precious metal articles mandatory by the Central Government.

Hallmark on the precious metal article ensures marked purity on the article. Under BIS hallmarking scheme, the purity of the precious metal article is marked on the article only after testing by BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking centres as per the relevant Indian Standard.

No hallmarking center has been set up by Central Government or by Bureau of Indian Standards. Hallmarking centres are generally set up by private entrepreneurs. As on 25th February, 2017, there are 441 BIS recognized hallmarking centres across the Country.
