Ahead of the Delhi assembly polls due next year, chief mister Arvind Kejriwal announced free electricity for people consuming up to 200 units amonth. Those who consume between 201 and 400 units would be given a 50% subsidy by the state government. Kejriwal said the State government will spend approximately Rs 1,800-2,000 crore annually for the subsidy. Delhi has at least 4.9 million domestic power consumers. The chief minister said the move will cover at least 33% consumers whose usage is less than 200 units in the summer. “During the winter, the power consumption of around 70% people is below 200,” he said As he looked to give a boost to his ‘aam aadmi’ image before the polls, Kejriwal said Delhi had the cheapest electricity in the country and this was additional relief to the ‘aam aadmi’ in the city.
