After completing the job of pending electrification of all inhabited villages in the country, the Centre is now focussing on ensuring power is available in every house under the Saubhagya scheme by the year-end, something that may take yeoman effort to achieve in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The two states account for over half of the households in the country without electricity. UP will need to electrify almost 1.33 crore households, while Bihar needs to bring electricity to almost 32 lakh households in the next eight months. A total of 3.13 crore households are without electricity in the country.
UP, the country’s largest state, electrified about 5.42 lakh houses in February, while Bihar electrified about 95,000 houses. UP will need to provide electricity to about 16 lakh houses a month and Bihar 4 lakh houses a month if they are to meet the target by December.
