(LiveMint) Soon after India started importing crude oil from the US at $2 a barrel cheaper than Dubai crude, oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the 14-member cartel of producing nations, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec), that New Delhi has other buying options. (LiveMint) The Indian Railways ecosystem can create a million jobs within the next 12 months, said railway minister Piyush Goyal at the opening session of the India Economic Summit. As part of this exercise, the national carrier plans to create a sort of a franchisee model wherein local entrepreneurs, by using a smart device, can book tickets at 2,000 railway stations across its network which don’t have a booking office. “This is in the works and will happen very soon,” Goyal. The proposal, if it goes through, will fetch higher returns to 4.5 crore EPFO subscribers in the current declining interest rate regime where returns on provident fund accumulations are bound to see a downward trend, much in sync with other small saving schemes. (TH) The Gujarat government on Thursday gave indications of a possible reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) rates for petrol and diesel after the Centre asked States to take measures to bring down the fuel prices. The move will make poll-bound Gujarat the first to follow the Centre’s suggestion. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had announced the State’s resolve to cut VAT rates.
