At least 35 per cent of the LPG cylinders in BPL homes in Gujarat have not been refilled since the connections were installed a year ago under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), officials said Friday. The officials revealed this a day ahead of Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan’s visit to a hamlet in Gandhinagar district for the nationwide launch of the “LPG Panchayat” under the PMUY on Saturday.

In a media briefing ahead of Pradhan’s visit official, the sources said over 35 per cent of the 11.59 lakh LPG connections installed in BPL households in Gujarat during the last one year are lying dormant. Over 39 lakh LPG connections have been targeted to be released under the PMUY in Gujarat between 2016 and 2019. These 39 lakh connections are part of the five crore LPG connections that the government plans to release across the country during this period, said the officials about the programme that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Uttar Pradesh on May 1, 2016.
