PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Gujarat on Thursday will also see the inauguration of the Sauni irrigation project that seeks to resolve problems of water shortage in Saurashtra with the help of the Narmada project, conceived by Modi as the CM of the State. “Saurashtra region is known for periodic drought. The rivers are of very short length. Irregular rainfall adds to uncertainty of water availability,” an official said, adding that the project seeks to resolve water problems in and around Surendrananagar.

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani said, “With the filling of Aji Dam by Narmada water, we have successfully taken another significant step towards completion of Modiji’s dream of supplying water to the parched Saurashtra region. The work of Phase-I Link-3 amounting to Rs 2,024 cr is completed and pipeline was commissioned in October 2016. This project will benefit 19,508 acres in Morbi and 4,127 acres of Surendranagar.
