Comedian Pranit More has issued a public apology following widespread backlash over a viral crowdwork video from one of his stand-up performances, acknowledging what he described as a “lapse of judgement” during the interaction.
The controversy began after a clip from a show in Gurugram surfaced online, showing an audience member making derogatory remarks about a woman during a crowdwork segment. The video quickly spread across social media, drawing criticism from users who accused both the audience member and the comedian of normalising misogynistic behaviour.
In a statement shared on Instagram, More admitted he should have intervened when the remarks were made. He explained that he became carried away by the audience’s reaction and failed to stop the conversation despite recognising the nature of the comments.
The comedian said he accepted the criticism directed at him and acknowledged that providing a platform for such remarks contributed to the controversy. He apologised to those who were hurt by the incident and promised to learn from the experience.
More also stated that he is cooperating with authorities in connection with the legal proceedings arising from the case. He appealed to the public for an opportunity to improve, adding that he intends to reflect on both his content and conduct moving forward.
The incident involved audience member Himanshu Jangra, who reportedly recounted a dating experience and suggested that spending money on a date entitled him to something in return. The remarks were met with laughter from sections of the audience, including More, before the clip later went viral online.
The fallout has been significant. Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered cases against both More and Jangra on charges related to obscenity and sexual harassment. The National Commission for Women has also summoned them over allegations of promoting non-consensual conduct and sexual coercion.
Additionally, Jangra reportedly lost his job after the video gained widespread attention online.
