Russian President Vladimir Putin has defended India’s right to pursue an independent foreign policy, stating that external pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce ties with Russia would be harmful to global stability and international relations. Speaking at a press conference, Putin described India as a reliable strategic partner and emphasized that a country of India’s size and economic strength would always prioritize its national interests.
His remarks come amid continued concerns in Western capitals over India’s close engagement with Russia, particularly in the energy sector following the Ukraine conflict. Several Western nations, including the United States, have urged India to reduce purchases of Russian crude oil. However, Putin asserted that India’s growing ties with the United States do not create friction in India-Russia relations and that New Delhi has every right to engage with countries that serve its economic and strategic interests.
The Russian President praised India’s economic progress under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, describing it as the result of sustained effort rather than a sudden achievement. He reiterated that Moscow welcomes India’s expanding global partnerships and sees no contradiction between India maintaining strong relations with both Russia and the West.
Putin also addressed the evolving dynamics between India and China, describing the relationship as “delicate” and saying it would be inappropriate for Russia to interfere. He expressed confidence that Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping would continue efforts to resolve outstanding issues, including border-related concerns. According to Putin, Russia’s strong ties with India do not undermine its partnership with China, just as its close relationship with Beijing does not affect its friendship with New Delhi.
On defence cooperation, Putin renewed Russia’s offer to jointly develop and manufacture the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter aircraft with India. He said Russia remains open to collaboration without restrictions and highlighted the potential for the aircraft to become a jointly produced India-Russia defence platform.
The remarks underscore Moscow’s commitment to strengthening strategic, economic, and defence ties with India amid changing global geopolitical dynamics.
