The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is soon expected to launch a national toll-free number for people to report about road accidentson national highways (NHs) and to register complaints regarding the operations and maintenance of the NHs. The launch of the helpline number – 1033 – is scheduled to be held in the first week of February, the Times of Indiareported.

NHAI chairman Deepak Kumar told the daily that the aim of the initiative was to ensure that accident victims of the national highways were able to receive timely medical treatment.  “We have completed all the work related to this project. The aim is to provide quick help, rescue any accident victim, and take him/her to the nearest hospital. We are also collaborating with state governments for the deployment of ambulances along highways exclusively for our road users,” Kumar said.
